Some Intro

Cities, urban environments, theatres, archeological sites and museums are living organisms and dynamic entities where cultures, traditions, languages and values coexist and interact and are important pieces, though different aspects of what we call cultural heritage of a place.

Protecting and promoting Europe’s cultural heritage also appears among the strategic objectives of the European Union. Raising awareness on the importance and value of cultural heritage amongst students and young people is of vital importance if we aim to ensure future sustainability.

Cultural heritage education (CHE), as one of the priorities of the European Heritage Strategy for the 21st Century, can focus on the promotion of our shared cultural heritage while at the same time support tolerance attitudes as it makes obvious that different cultural identities can complement and enrich each other by co-existing and shaping a common European identity.

This course aims to train teachers to think critically about heritage and to develop skills which can be used to influence the design of new teaching materials.

For the purposes of the course the participants will visit various spots of historical or cultural interest such as Epidaurus, Mycenae, Vergina, Meteora  and participate in structured activities in the close areas.

Methodology

This course, developed in the framework established by the Erasmus+ Programme, is crafted to include both formal and non-formal education methodologies.

Each day of the course the participants will have the opportunity to visit archeological sites, theatres and historical places and take part in constructive activities and games.

The pedagogical methods used in this training course are based on outdoor education, place-based learning, non-formal education, experiential learning and learning by doing. Our aim is to give to the participants the opportunity to understand how the learners’ motivation increases when they take the main responsibility of their own learning while the teacher steps back, taking the role of facilitator or learning guide. Thus, throughout this course the participants are expected to have the chance to experience on themselves the benefits of the active learning methodology at the same time as learning how to apply it in their work.
